Quick Mental Breaks That Calm My Brain

1. I do nothing for ten minutes.
No scrolling. No thinking about my to-do list. Just breathing and letting my brain relax.

2. I water my plants
Just watering the plants and trimming them is already for me a peaceful little ritual. For many time I was a plant-killer, I didn’t know how to take care of them, I used to give to much love (water) or too little haha. Now I took the time to learn more about them and to spending the time to check on them, see how they are, I check things like “did they have enough water”, “Are they at a spot where they can catch some sun?”

3. I take a walk without my phone.
Even just around the block, this helps me reconnect with the world around me.

It shifts my focus from what is unfinished to what I have already accomplished.

Enough to feel fresh and feel that I’m taking care of myself, and not feel overwhelmed with all the skincare steps out there. This time gives my mind space to slow down.

A simple reach and twist routine helps me wake up without a rush.

7. I do a 30-minute workout.
I try to move my body every day for at least 30 minutes. Be it a stretching, step-counting workout, or a guided pilates class through the app. Just find what works for you

8. I fold the clean clothes while listening to an audiobook.
While I’m busy doing this manual work, I use this time to learn something new. There are many apps out there that you can listen to a whole book in 15 minutes, of course, it is a summary, but enough to learn the main concepts and lessons of the book.

9. I clean one small area.
Even clearing off my bedside table helps me feel more grounded.

10. I drink a glass of water before coffee.
It helps my brain and body feel more balanced and makes sure I have some water during the day. For me, it works as a rule: for each cup of coffee, at least one glass of water.

The idea of just being around your partner, while doing your own stuff. It doesn’t mean that you are not there, present for each other, it is more having a “me time” while being together. Remember when I said about creating digital assets? or the Pinterest board? Sometimes I do that while chilling with my partner, while he is playing video games. He oftens check on me, shows affection and the other way is the same, so we are nurturing our own interests while nurturing our relationship, and it just works for us.

32. I do a prep-meal.
Taking the time to prepare my meals makes me feel calmer during the week. Knowing that I have part of the meal or the whole meal already prepared for the day prevents me from feeling overwhelmed late in the afternoon.

Before you go

None of these habits are fancy. They are small things that bring me back to myself, especially on the hard days. What works for me might look different from what works for you, and that is okay. The important thing is choosing to show up for yourself in whatever way feels good right now.

If you want a gentle place to start, try a puzzle; it is fun and you can do that while soaking your feet in an exfoliating water. I made free word searches and crossword puzzles that you can print at home. They are calming, screen-free, and surprisingly satisfying. I very much hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
